Application process

1. Submit your application

The deadline to submit the lottery application is 11:59 PM (EST) on Thursday, December 22, 2016. Please note that the only way to register for the course is to apply for the lottery using the above link. Please do not try to register for the course via WebSIS.

You will be able to indicate which version of the course you are planning on taking on the application. However, this choice is not binding. Instead, we will ask you to make your final choice at the end of the first day of class.

2. Assignment mechanism

A primary goal of this course is to expose students to a broad range of perspectives by ensuring that all of MIT's many courses are represented. In this way, the course is primarily aimed at non-Sloan students. However, because the course will be held at Sloan, we have chosen to reserve approximately 10% of the seats for Sloan students. This works out to about 10 seats in total. Half of these seats will be reserved for graduate students and the other half for undergraduates.

3. Notification of results

We will notify you about the result of your application by 11:59 PM (EST) on Friday, December 23, 2016. If you are awarded a seat, you will be registered for the course automatically.

4. Acceptance and waitlist

If you are allocated a seat on December 23, you must confirm your spot by 11:59 PM (EST) on January 6, 2017. In the event that you receive a seat but are no longer interested in taking the course, please contact the teaching assistant for the course as soon as possible so that your seat can be given to someone else.

If you do not receive a seat in the initial allocation, we will automatically place you on a waitlist and notify you if a seat becomes available for you. Available seats from the waitlist will be allocated on a rolling basis, starting January 8, 2017. The chances of receiving a seat off the waitlist are small, particularly if you have not heard from us by January 8.
